Day of the Dead Part 1

Friday 1 November 2013
We thought we would take a drive into the mountains, as the scenery around the ranch was so beautiful.  Jose and Lolita said they would take us; we said if they’re busy we can sort ourselves out but they were happy to take us.  Once we were in the mountains Lolita said she hadn’t been there in 20 years or so, so she and Jose were really happy to have taken the time to go and have a look.  We saw a big cactus.

Then back to the ranch for a quick nap for me and a dip in the pool for Trevor.  Then we went to Lolita’s brother’s ranch which was nearby.  Beautiful.  Lolita’s family were all there. Two of her sisters and two brothers, a nephew.  They were all so lovely, warm and welcoming.

A friend of the family was there and she was saying that in her town they don’t celebrate Day of the Dead.  Really?  Why not?  They’ve all been converted by the evangelicals and they ‘disapprove’ so they killed it.  Cultural vandals.  For all that I have no time for the Catholic church, by pretending old traditions are actually Christian, a lot of ancient traditions have been able to survive under the Catholics.  Day of the Dead is a classic example.  500 years of Spanish, Catholic rule and this wonderful tradition has survived.

He had some excellent Mezcal which we thoroughly enjoyed.  And then a late lunch.  OMG!  Food was excellent.  Black mole chicken.  Fish which I poured the mole onto.  Tamalas.  Yes, more mole on that too.  Yum! Took a quick wwalk around the ranch.  So beautiful.
