Yay Palenque!

Wednesday 6 November 2013
Checked out the ruins at Palenque, one of the first excavated in the nineteenth century while the whities were speculating that maybe the Egyptians had come over to the Americas to build pyramids as the Indians couldn’t be responsible for such high culture; architecture, engineering, art, astronomy.

Absolutely gorgeous.  In the museum they had lots of cool stuff but the highlight was the sarcophagus of Pakal, one of the kings.  Totally blew us away.

Then onto Misol-Ha; beautiful 30 meter waterfall.

Then Agua Azul.  The limestone creates the blue colour, and creates limestone formations as the water goes over the rocks.  Too bad it started raining – hard.  The place was really beautiful and the water all azul.  Would have been lovely to go for a swim.  But as it was we still got to see the beautiful water and the falls.

Turned out it was the start of a big rain weather pattern.  The next few days were still good but the rain was a bummer.
