Chacchoben and Kohunlich Pyramids and Spanish Fort

Tuesday 12 November 2013
Fit in two sites today plus a fort.  Both Mayan sites were relatively small but very beautiful.  Here are some photos of the pyramids and one of the type of stucco mask that they used; mostly they have worn away over time or if in good condition are now in museums.

We went to Bacalar which is a town on a big inland lagoon which has access to the sea.  They have an old fort there.  Probably spent ten minutes going around the fort and then thought we’d have a quick look in their museum.  The museum was fascinating and we had to drag ourselves out of there.  From the Mayan beginnings to the Mayan uprisings to the psycho pirates – one used to just stab people as he walked through town – they think he might have been mad.
